Work & Turkeys
In the last two weeks I finally headed back to work after a long 4 months of being laid off, it was a nice break from the real world to get to enjoy myself and focus on some personal goals. I’m looking forward to making money, but I’m not looking forward to getting back to 80 hour weeks and missing out on all the hunting preparations I want to do, but ill make time for what is important to me. This is my second year being a foreman on an asphalt plant, and as we start the year with a lot of meetings I am slowly remembering all the things that make my job stressful. My mom, Sue, got me the book Extreme Ownership for my birthday and so far it is really good, it is recommendation that I got from listening to Josh Miller’s podcast, Duk Dogs. I am new to this leadership role but with guidance from my peers and other leaders in the company I know I will be successful in anything I do, as long as I take the time and go through the steps, learn from my mistakes and keep moving forward being better than I was the day before. I’m really hoping that I still get to put something into the blog once or twice a month while working the crazy hours, but only time will tell.
This last weekend is only a few days before the 1st season opens for turkey hunting in Wisconsin, I’ve had cameras out for the last couple months just seeing what was going on and did have turkeys wondering past everyday at the same time so I have a decent pattern of where the birds are going in the late morning, but the last big snowfall we got pushed branches down in front of my cell cameras and used up all my pictures in a matter of a day, and now all the snow is melted so Im sure their pattern is switched up a little but I have a pretty good idea from years past where to start to try and locate birds. I’ve never killed a turkey, but love bowhunting so much that I am going to bring the Mathews out and try to get one with the bow. I am dialed in good, and have some nasty Grim Reaper broad heads to really tear open a bird if the opportunity presents itself.
I am going to go for more of a run and gun technique for chasing birds this year, going out with no blind to try and locate early morning with a owl call see if I can get them to gobble and then go from there. If nothing else I’m just happy to be out there giving it a shot on my own, I have a few different piece of land I can’t hunt, and I struggle the first morning ill just keep moving to the next one, I’m going to 100% dedicate Saturday and Sunday just to turkey hunting. I was hoping to get Friday off but right now it isn’t looking too promising. I have been practicing my mouth calls when I’m driving too and from work and am really confident with them, I’m not going out to try turkey calling competitions but I am really happy with how far I’ve come with them. Once turkey season has come and gone I have to really focus on my duck and goose calling, I can duck call a little but nothing too great. The goose drives me nuts, I just need to really practice, it hasn’t been something that I was overly passionate about until last fall, but not all the calling is cool as fuck to me, just seeing birds work and cupped up coming into decoys gets me fired up. Thanks for reading guys, watch out for more YouTube content coming this summer!
