Season Lull

I’d much rather be writing about how many miles I’m walking looking for sheds, but the snow in Wisconsin has made this a “lull” for sure. The snow just won’t give up, just when it starts to melt away we get about 7 inches onto of the feet we already have, and the deer are definitely struggling out there. Trail camera pictures showing deer walking around with snow almost touching their belly, scrounging around looking for food. The property that I primarily hunt has absolutely zero deer, they are all moved off looking for new food sources, but as it gets warmer and some of the snow is melting off in the fields the turkeys are coming back and scratching around, so I’m sure the deer will follow suit soon. While I’m dreaming about turkey season being here so I have something to hunt again, I’ve been looking into some new gear. I feel like I’m always looking at something hunting related when I’m on my phone, I’m looking forward to the Wisconsin Open Season Sportsman Expo so I have the opportunity to put my hands on some tree stands. I am a little torn between both Novix and Lone Wolf Custom Gear, both seem to have great warranty and customer service, something that as I get older gets to be more important to me. I always tell people about how when I call HHA Sports “1-800” number they actually have a real person that answers the phone, and its a blessing not to sit around on the automated phone bullshit. Another reason I am looking into LWCG and Novix is I want to do more hang and hunts this year, I tried to get more mobile last year with a saddle and it just wasn’t for me. I’m much more comfortable sitting in a hang on, but I’m not as confident setting up and tearing down in the dark. Which is just something I have to practice more, I bought my first ever safety harness for hunting this winter and that will help a lot with the comfort of getting set up and tearing down. Its crazy to me that growing up we have always used ladder stands, and didn’t move them around all that much, but now that I bow hunt in a couple ladder stands over the years, its like the deer pin point me, like they know they have seen someone in the tree before. I suppose that during gun season the bucks are rutted up and the does are being chased around so they don’t look around as much, at least that’s the observation I have made. I haven’t really made a decision on what I want to run for sticks yet this year, everything is so expensive it doesn’t matter what you go with nowadays you are going to spend some money, but I would like to find something that packs nice and tight. All in all, this season lull has consisted of me browsing through new gear coming out at ATA, scouting on OnX for different spots I want to check out, and brainstorming what I can do to make this my best year yet. Thanks for reading guys!
