Summers Over, Finally

Holy shit its hard to believe that summer has flown by, I haven’t touched my laptop for 4 months, and basically neglected all the things I love for the majority of the summer. It wasn’t busier than usual at work, but the stress seems to get worse with every year that goes by, I really need a magazine company to pick me up for 100k a year so I can go chase whatever is in season all year long. With work finally slowing down I’m hoping to get back on here and update how my hunting season is going, for now ill start with the last few weeks so far!

The goose season hasn’t started off too fast so far this year, I’m still picking up Saturdays here and there so I’ve really only been able to get out on Sundays, but we have had some very memorable days out in the field. Started off the first hunt of the year a little hungover and went and sat in a field close to where we have seen birds but wasn’t sure if they would want to use it or not, so we ended up bird watching, we have had a couple other hunts like that so far as well. The best hunt so far this year was 10/5, it was a Saturday and it was absolutely picture perfect, we weren’t sure going into it if we were on the “X” but it was our best shot, Benny, Marshall, Kody and I went out early got the spread set up and sat in some corn that was left up for the insurance guy to check out, the birds were roosting close by on water and when they got up they would fly over the trees and dump right into the spread, it was picture perfect, we got our 3 man limit of 12 and packed up and headed to breakfast. Now I make it sound like it was great but the reality of it is I wasn’t exactly as dialed in as I would like to be. We ended up only needing one more bird and a group of probably 8 or 10 birds came in and benny told me to call the shot they were going to let me take one solo and I’m watching them come in just being greasy, maple leafing just eager to get into the field. I have 3 bird in front of me and I’m watching them start to get close, I was going to let them sit in my lap just a nice easy chip shot when Benny yells “take the one on the right! Shoot him, shoot him!”… I didn’t even see the bird on my right about 10 feet in front of me, panicked and emptied my gun, and missed every shot. Luckily, Marshall followed up and knocked one down to finish the hunt.

With all the excitement of the birds being around and wanting to get out with my buddies I have kind of put deer on the back burner until the weather cools off a little more. I didn’t do a lot of prep for deer season this year, I have another property I could hunt but I haven’t scouted and I only have cameras up on the property that I usually hunt. Even the cameras I have up haven’t been too active, but I’m excited to just go sit in a tree and relax for a while. While we have been out hunting geese this year, one of Bennys friends, Mason, has been coming out with us. He is in school for some photography stuff and has taken some awesome pictures and videos of the hunt. Its so special to me to be able to capture these moments, life is short and having pictures to cherish these days will always mean a lot to me. Thank you guys for reading, hoping to start getting these out every couple weeks for the winter!
