Hunting Season Overview
As I sit in the airport 3 hours early for my flight that keeps getting delayed I decided to give an update on the hunting season. It was another good season, nothing too crazy happened though, every year I wish I would’ve hunted more, prepared more, and spent less late nights at the bar. At the end of the day though I wouldn’t trade the memories for anything.
As far as goose hunting goes, every morning I could get out with the boys you bet your ass I was out there. On hunts that I was apart of, we shot 73 geese and 11 ducks. We had a 4 man limit, 5 man limit, and we were 1 goose short of a 7 man limit. I can’t even properly describe the laughs and fun we had on these hunts, there was never a day that I said “Man, I should’ve stayed in bed”. One exciting thing that happened this Goose season was that Benny started making goose breast into pastrami, it is absolutely delicious. It isn’t too hard to make, you have to brine the boobs for a few days and then smoke the meat. I bought a dehydrator and a meat slicer this year and started making my own goose jerky, it’s pretty simple, and a way for me to enjoy what I kill. I worked on my goose calling a little, but the only time I would try to blow it in the blind was if the boys needed a good laugh, someday I will really dial it in, this year wasn’t it though. I bought a new shotgun last summer and it was great this year! I went with the Beretta A400 and I couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
I sat in the tree to bow hunt 8 times. Which is actually a good amount for me considering I didn’t take a “rutcation” this fall. I took off too much time this summer for weddings and other things to justify taking off a week to chase antlers. Per usual I was unprepared, I only had to presets hung and I wish I would’ve put more work into the spots. I didn’t have a good game plan for the wind, and my entry and exit was shit. If I would’ve put more work into these spots before season I think I could’ve got on deer a lot easier. During the summer I am so much more excited about goose hunting that I forget how much I love bowhunting until I’m actually sitting in the stand. One hunt I went to a preset that was on private land it was pretty warm out that afternoon but there was a cold front moving in the next day so I was pretty excited about the hunt, I wandered out to my stand just to get to the tree to see that I no longer had a stand there… someone decided they needed it more than me. Took my bow hanger and everything, its just a shitty feeling when people steal, I put in hard work to buy my own gear. That day I ended up just going to the bar and enjoying some drinks with friends. One of the best parts about deer hunting is I spend a lot of time with my grandpa Don. He is one of my favorite people, he always makes sure I leave his house with a full belly, and some food to take home. If it wasn’t for him I don’t know that I would love deer hunting as much as I do.
All in all, the hunting seasons were pretty good. They always go by to fast, and I never seem to do as much hunting as I would like to. With my new job during the winter I think I’m going to start taking more time off in the fall to do what I’m passionate about, chasing deer and geese.
