Bow Season ‘22
To say this season was uneventful would be a major understatement
This Wisconsin archery season was one of my most memorable seasons i’ve had in a long time. I put in the most amount of prep work that I ever have, scouting and planning for the upcoming season, I knew if I could get my ass in a tree enough I would have success and, like usual, work made sure that was the hardest part about hunting, actually having time to sit in a tree.
But when I did finally get out it ended up being some of the best hunting I’ve ever had. The middle of October was the first time I made it out for an afternoon sit. The weather was warm but I saw four does, I could’ve made a shot on them but I have a hard time shooting when you never know what will walk out after them. I proceed to keep my hopes up, I make it out a couple weeks later on a Saturday morning, the weather is getting a little colder but nothing crazy yet, pretty nice out for late October still, that morning I didn’t see any deer, and it wasn’t much of a surprise as this stand is primarily better in the afternoon. Finally, November 3rd rolls around and I get 4 days off of work in a row. Hoping for a good cold front as the week is progressing, I end up getting a perfect wind for my favorite stand, but it’s warm. We're talking 47 and sunny, but that’s alright, I am just happy to have some time in the woods and not at work. The next two days it cools off and the deer really start moving. I see all sorts of deer, but the ones that are worth shooting aren’t cooperating. Across the river I see does and bucks mosey back and forth playing around bumping does, and then I see a nice old 8 pointer, saggy neck, you can tell he’s been around the block a few times. I give him a snort-wheeze thinking that might fire him up a little since he was bumping the two small bucks out of the river. He doesn’t even react, just keeps going about his day. Even seeing him 70 yards away doing his thing had me so excited for the next sit.
It didn’t get any better though, that was the most exciting day of hunting I had. I didn’t get out for any late season sits and I ended up eating tag soup this year. Im happy with it though, there is a podcast that I listen to by Clint Casper, and he always ends it with '“Don’t Fucking Settle” and I truly am happy that I didn’t, I’ll keep working hard and putting the time in and eventually ill get onto a nice Wisconsin Whitetail. Thanks for reading guys!
