Bad Weekend To Be A Goose 12/9 & 12/10

After the Wisconsin gun season came to an end, I get more and more excited for the last couple weeks of goose hunting. Work finally slows down and I get to help put in some work to find birds. I never realized how much fun scouting is, driving around looking for geese can get discouraging when you aren’t finding them, but when you find a field with hundreds of birds on it, its like being on cloud nine, and then when you can actually get permission on the field, it gets even better!

The weather was supposed to be cold, 20s in the early morning warming up to about 34 during the day, with a north west wind. Great conditions to put the hurting on some big Canadians, so we threw the whole trailer at them. My uncle has about 6 dozen full body tangle free decoys, 4 dozen fully flocked Avians that he takes really good care of, and a few dozen sleeper shells mixed in with some big foots, so we had a good size spread out. On Saturday the birds started flying about 8:30am, and the first bird of the day came in pretty nice, we always call the first solo to come in the “scout” we put him down and got ready for more. As more birds came in though we knew they weren’t loving our set up with the A frames, we were on the edge of the field with some brush and trees behind us, but it just wasn’t enough to make the birds come in and do it dirty. We ended up getting some birds to work into the field, but they landed a little deep in the spread, and then the whole sky started blowing up with birds, they would come check it out and circle a couple times, and just keep landing deeper, it was crazy, at one point I think we had close to 100 birds around trying to land in the field. Some of the birds we got to work in close enough that we had good shooting and we ended up with 19 birds out of our 7 man limit of 21. One of the best hunts I had all year!

After we packed up on Saturday and headed home to clean birds, we saw a field close to home loaded with birds from one end of the field to the other, luckily in a small town its pretty easy to get ahold of the land owner, we we got ahold of him, got permission and had a game plan for Sunday already. We got out there early to set decoys because we figured someone else would try to get out there because its hard to miss that many birds in a field, got all set up and hung out and did some bullshitting until the birds started to fly. It worked out about perfect, if our shooting was a little better we would’ve been done earlier, but we got our limit before 11am and started packing up! It was another picture perfect hunt, there is just nothing better than being out with goods friends shooting geese and having a blast doing it. 21 birds out of our 7 man limit, my first limit out of the season. While we were packing up decoys the birds kept flying and I even got to see my first snow goose in Wisconsin, it was the last bird as they were flying in a “V” and it was so cool to see! Just added right onto the incredible weekend we were already having. I can’t thank my uncle, Benny, enough for getting me into waterfowl hunting, its one of my favorite hobbies for sure. Thank you for reading guys!
